Medicare Certification Reminders: Getting AEP-Ready
10/1/2026
AEP rewards the prepared. The agents writing the most business in October are the ones who certified in the summer and spend September prospecting instead of testing.
Certification is permission. You cannot sell Medicare Advantage or Part D without completing required training and receiving a ready-to-sell notice from each carrier. No ready-to-sell, no selling — even if you've passed everything and are waiting on the letter.
Start with general certification. AHIP is the most widely accepted and typically opens in late June for the following plan year. Some carriers also accept NABIP's Medicare certification, which may cost less depending on your carrier mix. Confirm what each of your carriers accepts before you register.
Then every carrier, separately. Each carrier layers on its own product and compliance modules. Two things agents miss: MA and PDP training are often separate, so complete both if you sell both. And attempt limits vary — read the rules before opening a final exam, not after.
Passing isn't finishing. Your certificate must reach the carrier, and the ready-to-sell notice has to reach you. Verify both. This is a common reason an otherwise-ready agent can't sell on October 15.
Know the calendar:
- Late June–August — certifications open
- August–September — carrier submission deadlines
- October 1 — marketing next year's plans begins
- October 15–December 7 — AEP
Carrier deadlines are set by the carrier, not CMS, and they land well before AEP. Recertification is annual. It's required to write new business and to keep collecting renewals on the book you already built.
Please note: Amwins is unable to assist brokers with completing or obtaining this certification. Brokers will need to access the appropriate certification portal directly to complete the required training and certification.
